| [I] Amidst the general brouhaha - Birthdays!!! [message #277129] |

(The scene is the old stage of the Grand Ole Opry, with the stylized barn
motif. Sammy, a Dark-Eyed White ferret, dressed in a sequined suit and
yarmulke, comes forth and speaks into an oversized radio microphone.)
Sammy: Ladies and gentlemen, in honor of Ruth's birthday, we've got a real
special group here to play a little bit of that old "Texas swing". The Grand
Ole Opry is proud to present - Murphy and the Texas Playhobs!
(Murphy, Skippys on dobro, fiddles, clarinets and saxophones, and Max on the
steel guitar, come out on stage to much applause from the Opry audience.
They're dressed is cowboy hats and suits with a Western cut.)
Murphy: Thanks so very much for the warm welcome, folks. We'd like to play a
couple of songs for you, if we may. Okay, boys, hit it!
(The Playhobs set up a swinging pace with an instrumental intro on fiddles,
drums, steel guitar, etc. Skippy begins crooning and ad-libbing in the
background and Murphy begins to sing.)
One night when the moon was bright on a moonlit glade.
That is where I found my little Cherokee maid. (Skippy: Ohhh-ho!)
The memory of that night of love, is lingering yet. (Skippy: Yes-yes!)
And I know I never will forget: (Skippy: Come in, boys!)
Chorus:
My little Cherokee Maiden, I love her so.
And though we're far apart.
I know I'll never be tradin' my love for her,
For anybody else's heart.
Someday I'll make a trip back to the Cherokee Strip, (Skippy: That's back in
Oklahoma, isn't it?)
And I'll carry her away with me. (Skippy: Ahhh!)
And straight as an arrow flies,
We'll ride to paradise,
My sweet little chickadee,
My little Cherokee Maiden and me.
(The Boys do an instrumental bridge, and sing the chorus again.)
My little Cherokee Maiden, I love her so.
And though we're far apart. (Skippy: Ahhh, now!)
I know I'll never be tradin' my love for her,
For anybody else's heart.
Someday I'll make a trip back to the Cherokee Strip, (Skippy: Yesss!)
And I'll carry her away with me.
And straight as an arrow flies,
We'll ride to paradise,
My sweet little chickadee,
My little Cherokee Maiden and me.
(Max, plucking on the steel guitar in front of him with one paw while moving
a steel bar along the strings with the other, segues into the second song.)
Skippy: Ahhh! Murphy, come in and sing it!
Murphy:
Deep within my heart lies a melody,
A song of old San Antone. (Skippy: San Antone!)
Where in dreams I live with a memory, (Skippy: Let's just go home!)
Beneath the stars, all alone. (Skippy: All alone!)
It was there I found, beside the Alamo, (Skippy: Alamo...)
Enchantment strange as the blue up above. (Skippy: Up above!)
A moonlit path, that only she would know, (Skippy: Why, naturally!)
Still hears my broken song of love. (Skippy: Ahh, tell 'em!)
Moon in all your splendor, know only my heart, (Skippy: Uh-huh...)
Call back my Rose, Rose of San Antone. (Skippy: Ahhhh!)
Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart,
Speak once again of my love, my own. (Skippy: AHH-hahhhh...)
Broken song, empty words I know,
Still live in my heart all alone. (Skippy: All alone!)
For that moonlit path by the Alamo,
And Rose, my Rose of San Antone. (Skippy: Ah...)
(Max, sliding his steel bar along the strings, goes into the instrumental.
From the rafters overhead three banners are lowered: HAPPY BIRTHDAYS TO
LISTICATH, JOHN LE FEBVRE, DAVID SULLIVAN, PAM WILLOUGHBY, DOM HAMON, ANDY
"JESTER" BROWN, ROY AYRES AKA RGEMINI, STEVE COOK, IAN HOGG, MARK
RATCLIFFE, ADRIAN MORGAN, JÖRG PLATE, JONATHAN BILL, MEGAMOLE, BRIAN NISBET,
ANDREW W M (TORAK) PERRY, JEREMY STARK, STEPHEN 'SJT' TAYLOR AND ANYONE ELSE
FROM THE FIRST HALF OF JUNE THAT WE'RE FORGETTING! REMEMBER, TO GET ON THE
BIRTHDAY LIST, SEND THE RELEVANT INFORMATION TO birthdays [at] lspace.org ! The
second banner reads THIS IS FOR BOB WILLS AND THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS - THANKS
FOR THE GREAT MUSIC, FELLAS! The third reads DRINK LOOZIEANZA COFFIE - WITH
CHICKORY!! The Grand Ole Opry always had the neatest advertisements. Skippy
takes over the melody on his fiddle, and Murphy sings again.)
Moon in all your splendor, know only my heart,
Call back my Rose, Rose of San Antone. (Skippy: Ah-hah!)
Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart, (Skippy: Yes, yes!)
Speak once again of my love, my own. (Skippy: AHHHH-hahhhh...)
Broken song, empty words I know,
Still live in my heart all alone. (Skippy: All alone!)
For that moonlit path by the Alamo.
Murphy and Skippy:
And Rose, my Rose of San Antone.
